Melksham Area Waterways Group
The new Waterways Group held its first meeting on February 25th to agree on how to develop its membership. The group aims to bring together a wide range of people involved in the canals and rivers and any other groups concerned with waterways in our region.
One immediate area of activity will be working with the Wilts & Berks Canal Partnership to consult the community on plans to bring the Wilts and Berks Canal back through Melksham by way of the new Melksham Link. This project is gaining momentum and the challenges it presents need addressing in a way that satisfies the majority of people it will affect.
The group believes that the way forward is to work closely with the community, Wiltshire Council’s Canal Officer Ken Oliver and in partnership with the Town and Parish Councils, British Waterways, the Wilts & Berks Canal Partnership, the Environment Agency and other interested parties. Enhancing the river through Melksham for the benefit of residents and visitors alike is also an exciting prospect and the interaction of the canal with the river through Melksham is a vitally important issue.
The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month and anyone interested in taking an active part in the group’s activities to help make these things happen should contact Miriam Zaccarelli, Melksham Community Area Partnership Officer, on 07865 065925.

The open consultation will run until the end of August and comment forms are available at the Town Hall and Library in Melksham.
