Did you know ...
The Melksham Community Area has a population of 24,000.
A working Group was set up to plan events for the Melksham Carnival and Village Fetes.
Report from Carnival working group
Members: Graham Ellis, Brian Warwick, Ali Morley, Tim Jalland, Miriam Zaccarelli
A meeting was held to plan events for the carnival/party in the park on July 17 in Melksham to promote MCAP, as it is the only time in the year that everyone in the town comes out.
We will have a stall in the King George V playing field between 2-5pm and a float in the carnival through town from 5.30 – 7pm. Other groups can share the stand – eg. Chamber of Commerce and Community Rail Partnership.
The same display will be taken to village fetes.
A people carrier will be the float, with display boards on it, to simply introduce and publicise the CAP (see diagram below) with people representing the different theme areas of the CAP walking by it handing out leaflets. Ali has a group of young people who will make the ‘costumes’ – a sandwich board covered in opinions gathered throughout the day on the theme, and a hat to indicate the theme (illustrated below). Around 20 people will be needed to walk around with leaflets with the float.
The displays will be made easy to dismantle and transport to be used at village fetes. They will be made of 6 panels on lightweight and durable corrugated plastic, with the 12 theme groups blended into 6.
Jim Lowe will be asked to provide photographs. Sponsorship from supermarkets will be sought as they are focal points for the community.
A tagline is needed for all the publicity material, which the Steering Group needs to agree.
Consultation at the Carnival
Since we want to consult on every possible issue the leaflet introducing the CAP will incorporate a tear off blank page that people can fill in and return (3rd of A4).
Post boxes can be set up at supermarkets and in the 10 villages for two weeks for people to return completed answers to, with a free prize draw with prizes secured from the supermarkets.
There will be an interactive consultation activity for children (and adults) at the stand which involves putting priority cards in different jars.
We have spoke to Eye4 Design and the cost of all design and printing of boards and leaflets is £988 if we use the designer’s logo in the material (see breakdown of costs below). Another quote will be obtained from Colin Harrison.
Age No Barrier Week
Age No Barrier week is the week before the Carnival. We looked at two options to incorporate it - arranging transport to get older people from the villages to attend the carnival and providing a place for older people to watch the carnival from. But it was acknowledged that older people generally stay away from Carnival and it would be too ambitious a project to take on this year, to be looked at again for next year, and focus instead will be on getting to the summer fetes to reach the villagers.
Brian suggested running an event that promotes health, with the help of the NHS and it was agreed that although the stall at Party in the Park can be used to promote health, it is not a suitable venue to carry out screening or offer health advice. There had initially been a plan to run an event on Saturday 10 July in conjunction with Age No Barrier week but as the CAP’s main function is consultation, focus will be given to publicity and consulting on July 17.
